Issue 1: Who we are is how we lead
Your leadership newsletter dedicated to making small changes that lead to the improvements you want to achieve.
Welcome to your new leadership newsletter! Each month, we’ll explore a different area of leadership together. I’ll share some of my own experiences, the experience and learning from others and links to some things you may enjoy.
This month, I’ve been inspired by the quote below. So let’s explore who you are as a leader and work together towards the leadership improvements you’re after.
Who we are is how we lead
-Brené Brown
Are you leading or leaving people behind?
Have you experienced those leaders who run ahead leaving everyone else in their dust, seemingly not caring about the whirlwind of chaos they leave behind? Or maybe you’ve been lucky enough to experience leaders who aim to bring people with them, guiding them and learning and creating together.
We all have a natural way of being and that influences who we are as a leader. Maybe you’re an introvert like me and you prefer 1:1’s over large groups of people. Maybe you prefer harmony over conflict and therefore shy away from difficult conversations. It’s important to know and understand ourselves so that we can understand how we lead and adapt to meet the style and needs of others. My own leadership style has changed over the years (thankfully). In my first leadership role, I thought I needed to show my power and ended up simply telling people what to do. At the time, I couldn’t understand why they didn’t listen. As I’ve learned more about myself and felt more able to bring in vulnerability, kindness and authenticity, I’ve enjoyed leadership more as it felt more aligned to my values. If you want to know more about what leadership means to me, you can take a look here.

“Sometimes you’re the teacher, sometimes you’re the student.” - Dr Ebony Green
Dr. Green shares her wisdom about leadership from the perspective of teaching. Sometimes we’re teaching and developing others and sometimes we need the humility to realise we can’t know everything and can learn from those around us. Have a listen, there are so many meaningful moments to take away.
