Issue 6: New to leadership? Here's what you need to know.

Your leadership newsletter dedicated to making small changes that lead to the improvements you want to achieve.

Welcome to your leadership newsletter! Each month, we’ll explore a different area of leadership together. I’ll share some of my own experiences, the experience and learning from others and links to some things you may enjoy.

This month, I’ve been inspired by the quote below. So let’s explore how to embrace your first leadership position and work together towards the leadership improvements you’re after.

Become the kind of leader that people would follow voluntarily, even if you had no title or position.

-Brian Tracy

How do you lead effectively when you’re caught up in your own feelings of imposter syndrome?

If you’re feeling like an imposter, make a list of all the reasons you deserve to be in your position. Consider your professional experience, personal experience, success stories, accomplishments and personal qualities you bring to your role.

Stop comparing yourself to others! It’s so easy to get caught up in the comparison trap to ‘prove’ why you’re not good enough. It’s unhelpful for a number of reasons. You don’t know what’s really going on for anyone else, so it’s unfair to measure yourself against them. By spending time in the comparison trap, you’re wasting time and energy that you could be using to develop yourself.

Embrace failure. Let go of a need to be perfect. It can’t be done. Remember, there’s growth in making mistakes. Most of my greatest lessons have come from mistakes. James Dyson had 5,126 failures/ mistakes before discovering the secret to his bagless vacuum. Would he have pursued it over 5000 times if he thought it needed to be perfect from the first prototype?

Be yourself. Sure, we all have other leaders we admire, but there is only one you. And they hired YOU, so embrace who you are. Of course we all have areas we can develop and strengthen, but it’s the core of who you are that is important. So don’t try to be anyone else, just be you.

Who do you need in your corner?

When you’re in a leadership position, especially when you’re starting out, it’s so important to get the right support around you!

Here’s the top 5 people I couldn’t live without:

1- The Challenger
2- The Cheerleader
3- The Mentor
4- The Emotional Rock
5- The Truth Teller

Listen below for more on why.
